In this episode of the Silver Stumps podcast former England and Northamptonshire superstar Allan Lamb joins hosts Grant Timms and Trevor Lee to talk about his career, his thoughts on current cricket and his battle with prostate cancer and his participation in Cycle Slam 2024 which is a 1200 km bike ride from Rome to Nice - April 13th to 25th.

Allan made his test debut aged 28 and went on the play for England 79 times scoring 4656 runs including 14 centuries. A 2020 poll named him as Northamptonshire’s greatest player of all time.

During the episode we briefly discuss a couple of matches he played in - the 1984 2nd Test England v West Indies at Lords and the 1987 ODI v Australia when he scored 18 off the last over to win the match.

Allan also mentioned the Notts v Northants county championship match in 1995, the season he came closest to winning the county championship, when Notts rattled up 527 having been 362/1 to which Northants replied with 781/7 dec at 4.8 per over (their highest ever score) and then bowled Notts out for 157 to win by an innings and 97 runs.

Allan talks about his battle with prostate cancer and his support of Ron’s walks.

Allan now organises wine tours of South Africa as well as cricket and rugby tours.

In this episode of the Silver Stumps podcast England O60s captain Richard Merriman joins hosts Grant Timms and Trevor Lee to reflect on the Over 60s Cricket World Cup final in which England were beaten by Australia.

Richard is very candid in his recognition that this was ultimately a game too far for his team and that the Australians were well deserved winners who were particularly awesome in the field as well as very accurate with their bowling.

Richard also talks about the time after the final when the squad spent time with the street children of India who are mad keen on cricket and he reflects on the humbling experience that that was.

Richard also looks ahead to the five match series coming up this summer against Pakistan starting in early July.

Pakistan were the inaugural winners of the Over 60s World Cup and have a squad that contains several ex-test players led by Salim Malik.

We plan to be at one of the games with our podcast gear to cover it for a future episode.

Here are the final results of the Over 60s World Cup tournament:

  • World Cup Final: England lost to Australia
  • 3rd / 4th place: New Zealand bt Sri Lanka
  • 5th / 6th place: Wales lost to West Indies
  • 7th / 8th place: USA bt Canada
  • 9th / 10th place: India bt South Africa
  • 11th / 12th place: Zimbabwe bt Rest of the World
