In this episode, Keely and Corrine talk through some recent races and news around the Boston Marathon and Team USA funding. Then they interview Sophie Power. Sophie Power is a long time ultrarunner and mom of three who stepped into a calling when a photo went viral of her breastfeeding her then 3 month old son in the Courmayeur aidstation during the 2018 UTMB. Since then she has become the trustee to the research and insight charity, Women in Sport, as well as launching her own advocacy organization SheRACES which fights to get more women on startlines. They discuss the importance of implementing policies that encourage female participation and how to get more athletes on start lines.

Keely and Corrine interview Jordan Marie Brings Three White Horses Whetstone who is a Lakota, and also is the founder + organizer of Rising Hearts,a filmmaker, public speaker, Project Manager at UCLA, and DEI consultant. Peyton Thomas is an ultrarunner, advocate, and postdoctoral research associate at CU Boulder.

She has her PhD in Biology and Marine Biology from UNC where she studied fish physiological responses to environmental stressors (potential future results of global warming).  We learned so much about her journey into this space, experience being underrepresented in science, and ways we can utilize the trail running community to help fight for environmental justice.

Keely, Corrine, and Hillary talk through Corrine’s 3rd place finish at the Cascade Crest 100 mile race.  Corrine talks us through her journey getting to the starting line healthy and feeling confident in her body and training. Keely and Corrine chat about all of the races that happened over the weekend and recent news around maternal health and women’s sports.  Then they deep dive into the Western States 100 and how it played out for Keely. Keely talks about her training leading up to the race, how she felt going in, and how she channeled calmness.  She talks us through the race, discussing the insane snow, amazing competition, attempting to run her own race, and troubleshooting on the fly.  Then we talk through her accidental trip at mile 80 that ended in a rather chaotic event, where she dislocated her shoulder, struggled to get it back in, and ultimately dropped from the race.  We discuss how hard DNFs are, even when they make sense, and her plans for the future.

Keely and Corrine talk about the World Mountain Running Championships, other races, and what happens if you have to run a race with your period. We highlight a recent post by elite triathlete, Emma Pallant, who got chastised by men for leaking blood onto her pink triathalon suit.  We discuss why this is harmful and ways to destigmatize menstruation and teach girls about their body in a positive way.  Then they interview Caitlin Jacobsen, a certified Eating Disorder Recovery Coach and Registered Counselor Agency Affiliate working at Opal Food and Body Wisdom in Seattle WA. She holds a M.S. in Integrative Physiological Sciences from UCLA, a B.A. in Neuroscience from Claremont McKenna College.
