One Footer in the Grave

With one foot in the door of their retirement home for senior web designers, Paul Boag, Andy Clarke, Jon Hicks, and Marcus Lillington get together once a month to distract eachother from everyday life and work. The show’s funny and frivolous and the chaps have a genuinely unique chemistry which will entertain you if you work on the web and even if you don’t.

Available Episodes 10

Back after their summer break, the four chaps decide whether each other’s improbable stories are a lie or the truth. Jon talks about his new car, Andy brings up his gout, and neither are at all cross about Paul and Marcus restarting the Boagworld podcast. This episode of One Footer in the Grave is appropriately sponsored by Allopurinol, the gout medication for when your big toe hurts like a b@stard.

It’s UK General Election time and the chaps have gathered to discuss it, but without mentioning politics. What would their top policies be if they were running for office? What do they think of novelty candidates like Count Binface? Plus, why are political party websites so terrible? Andy tells his story about being in the audience for BBC Question Time and the strange tale of designing for an intergalactic space warrior.

>Andy, Jon, Marcus, and Paul are back—sooner than expected—for another fun-packed episode. They talk about who’s voice they’d each like as an AI companion, Apple,Apple’s new iPads and why devices are now so thin that they crack when Andy sits on them. Then, inevitably, they discuss what they think about the new Dr Who.

The nerds of a feather are back for another episode. They talk about whether social media is now either dead or useless for promoting our work and whether old-fashioned email is replacing it. Paul explains his monthly newsletter strategy and how, for him, it’s replaced social media. Then, the boys discuss what they should do next, as they’ve (obviously) reached the pinnacle of their careers.

The intention was that this would be our Festive episode. We get there eventually, but only once we've finished discussing:

  • Andy's new Dreamtime Electric Blanket, the sponsor of the show
  • The new Dr Who - What do think? Were they right to change Davros?
  • Andy's shock DNA test results means he's not who he thought he was.
  • Marcus's intense suffering at earning lots of money.
  • Jon's Festive Sandwich Reviews

Fact check footnote:

  • Jon mistakenly pronounces 'Ncuti' as 'Chooty' rather than 'Shooty')
  • It was Jo Grant (not Sarah Jane) that was in The Green Death, but it wasn't her first story (that was Terror of the Autons)

In this delayed-release episode (recorded in May 2023), the chaps talk about Paul and Andy's joint seven week adventure in Recreation Vehicles around the United States of America earlier in the year. Did they fight or fall out? Or did they get along just fine in a way that doesn't make very entertaining listening? Paul also gets to witness a 'Malarkey Regeneration' first hand!

It’s a new year, the year of artificial things. In this episode, the four chaps talk about artificial intelligence and artificial hips. Andy has a (painful) bone to pick with Paul but all he got in response was an AI-written apology. Finally, the talk Mastodon and why it’s better than Twitter.

After a fabulous summer of fun, the four fellas are back with an extra-long episode. Even though it’s only October, they talk about Christmas and Andy’s plan to escape to Costa Rica. The chaps discuss which celebrity we’d elect to parliament and which cabinet position we’d want most. Then, they talk about whether ghosts exist or Andy was just drunk. (This episode was recorded before Liz Catasussrophe was beaten by a lettuce.)

In this new episode, Andy, Jon, Paul, and Marcus discuss the first stage of Paul’s latest motorhome and midlife crisis. They talk about what they like to do when they’re not working and wrap things up by suggesting what Andy should do for his hobby.
