Corn Coal & Corpses is a podcast that came about due to our love and fascination for true crime, mysteries, and the supernatural. After spending a long time listening to other large podcasts. We realized that after living in and around the Southern Illinois Region, we wanted to share and discuss a lot of the creepy history, famous (and not so famous) cases, and all around weird things that have been located in this region. Using our combined years in public safety, as well as family members who worked in law enforcement in this region. We wanted to do the absolute most accurate and in depth research on each subject we discuss. Yet allowing ALL of our listeners and followers to come up with each of their own conclusions. Most of the topics that are discussed will be of a serious nature, but we provide our listeners a bit of a twisted dark humor and light hearten fun in telling of these stories (no one wants to listen to boring, mono-toned, and dry discussions). So we try to inform listeners these events and accounts with a different style. So if you enjoy this podcast look us up on our social media accounts, as well as if you have any suggestions for an upcoming episode. Send us an email with your suggestion.

Even after the convictions her mother desperately seeks for answers. Years later she is contacted by a supposed Author with a national foundation, promising those answers. Left with no where else to turn, her mother agrees to assist this author in finding justice and telling her daughters story. The supposed author has a national tv/docu series come in and film and produce a show about this story. Its not until the episode airs is the mother and the girls family blind sided by all the lies, deceit, and misappropriate story that is told and shown to millions of people. Now with the assistance of this podcast we are able to bring you the entire story from the beginning, through out her life and during the tragic end and after of this wonderful teen and who she really was.
Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/coalcorncorpses)What happens when you wake up and your teenage child has just vanished. You turn to family and friends, hoping for a simple explanation. Phone call after phone call your simple explanation now gives way to fear. As minutes now become hours you turn to authorities for help. Yet receive very little. A persons past is now defining their future. You turn to your community and it’s the same response. Those hours now are turning into days.
After almost a week, you’re informed that your most horrific nightmare is now reality. They have found your daughter, but instead of being safe and on her way home. She is in the cold, dark, bottom of a local muddy creak. She’s not there by accident and that becomes obvious by the blocks and straps that keep her bound in the cold darkness.
Believing in truth and justice will always find the way. A story begins to unravel that you wouldn’t have believed had it been in a movie. Arrests are made, convictions are given and you are told that justice has been done. Time begins to go by and as it does, even more tragedy follows. When you feel you’ve hit your breaking point, a person comes into your life telling you they know and will answer all your questions. They are also going to help you finally heal through all your pain. They tell you the truth needs to come out, and that a famous tv show can help do that. Seeking those answers, you agree.
It’s not until the night the show airs do you find out those that were there to help you, to save you, to heal you. Instead destroyed you. You find out they had NO intention of helping YOU. They were there for their own financial and popularity gains. You never get the answers you so desperately needed, your dreams on closure are gone like your daughter.
Most of all, her life, her story, her legend is tainted and is turned into a lie. This is the story we are going to bring you now…….

One thing most people don't think or even realize is actual number of serial killers who have either grew up, lived, or committed their gruesome crimes right here in the heart of "Little Egypt". We are going to tell you about one of those killers who was thankfully caught before his terror on this region would have continued. Unfortunately three young women would lose their lives to this monster before he was caught and brought to justice. John Paul Phillips was just that, a monster. After committing these three brutal sexual assaults and murders, his arrogance is what brought him to his demise. If you've never heard of this predator or these cases, join us for another crazy true crime story straight out of this area.

On April 9th of 1988 a gruesome discovery is made south of Crab Orchard Lake, on a small country road in Union County. A car is found flipped over and appears to have been torched. When looked upon further, the truck opens up and out rolls a headless body of a man. Later investigation will discover that body is Michael Miley of Murphysboro Illinois. A 23 y/o local who had been reported missing just a few days earlier. The investigation quickly turns to one suspect, a convicted felon well known by police - Richard Nitz. Police soon discover that not only is the suspect the killer, the homicide was committed with the help of his wife Rita Nitz.
What is as crazy and insane as the crime, the investigation, and the trial and appeals. Will be the story of who these two, their youth, their long and bizarre history of crime and life in general, and how they both ended up here in Southern Illinois. This story is so mind blowing and insane, we couldn't keep it all in one episode. So follow along with us on this truly bizarre and actually hilarious story on two of the worlds dumbest criminals who ever lived......

In 1988 the city of Mt. Vernon was already trying to get back to a feeling of normalcy after already experiencing the unthinkable Tommy Odle murders of his entire family, the completely unimaginable and brutal rape and murder of 10 year old Amy Shultz. Only to be followed up by the absolute horrific and gruesome murders of the Dardeen Family in Ina. A year had pasted and just as the city of Mt. As he made his way to go inside, he finds the rear door kicked in, with the bolt and door frame broken. Alarmed Jeff yells for his wife but there is no answer. As he enters him home he is met by the most unthinkable sight, a sight that is the basis of most peoples nightmares. Laying on the bed is the bloody and mutilated body of his wife, Jana. 22 year old Jana Reynolds had been severally raped, beaten, as well as cut and stabbed multiple times.
