Hurdle

Join me, Emily Abbate, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for a good time. Hurdle is a wellness-focused podcast where I sit down with inspiring individuals to talk about everything from their big wins to how they’ve gotten through some of life’s toughest moments. On the show, you can expect vulnerability, motivation, and candid discussions with everyone from top athletes to aspiring entrepreneurs on what it really takes to follow your passions. My mission is simple: To inspire you to be your best self, move with intention — and have some fun along the way. Tell me: What's your #hurdlemoment?

Available Episodes 10

Coming in with the first 5MF of season 15 to give you the full rundown of what's tweaking with the show going forward. Also, a story about how I'm approaching perspective with so much disheartening news lately. Plus! My favorite listener question to date, answering what has anchored me in (almost) 6 years of Hurdle.

From the moment I first read Diego's writing, I was enamored. The opportunity to start off season 15 with his interview is a true honor. For episode 269, Diego — known to his millions of followers at Yung Pueblo, which stands for "young people" — opens up about his inspiration for writing. He talks about immigrating to this country, growing up in poverty, and his battle with drugs in college that lead him to a massive #hurdlemoment and life change — ultimately taking on meditation and completely pivoting toward a more holistic, healthier lifestyle. He shares the inspiration for his latest book, The Way Forward, and offers up advice on how to prioritize and communicate better within relationships.

What. A. Time. Popping in with a recap from my recent race in Berlin, in which I completed my fifth marathon major in 3:58:43. So amped on this, a major comeback from injury, and such a special moment for me personally after a difficult couple years.

I share what I take into consideration for traveling to run an international race, the precautions I took from the beginning of the year to battle plantar fasciitis and train for this safely, how I worked with my expert team (podiatrist, physical therapist, acupuncturist), and so much more. Plus: The lowdown on what exactly went down during the race on September 24, what it felt like to pace someone else to their big goal, and the ever-lovely answer to the "what's next?" question.

It's always such a joy to sit down with my dear friend and the brilliantly multi-faceted Robin Arzón, and today we are talking all about goal setting. Just in time for the release of her new empowerment journal Welcome, Hustler, Robin talks about her first memories of journaling and how she later saw it as a way to claim agency and ownership of her life. We talk about auditing your whole health — physically, emotionally, financially, and spiritually — to then jumpstart Robin's 5-step process on goal setting. Robin takes us through each step of her process and provides tactical, actionable tips on how to generate momentum through from ideation to goal completion. If you are someone who likes to set goals and is looking to define your own finish line, but craves a framework to do so, this episode is the for you.

Victoria Arlen is no stranger to hurdles. At age 11, the now-ESPN host developed two rare conditions known as transverse myelitis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. As a result, she quickly lost the ability to walk, speak, eat, and move. She slipped into a vegetative state, and her parents were told numerous times that they should “let go” and that their daughter would never be the same.

Fast forward four years, and Victoria beat all odds to make a miraculous recovery. She returned to life, albeit in a wheelchair, and soon found success as an athlete scoring a gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle at the 2012 London Paralympic games, as well as her dream job at ESPN — reporting for the X Games and Special Olympics.

In today’s episode, she talks about the biggest miracle of all: defying the odds yet again and after spending nearly a decade in a wheelchair paralyzed from the waist down, to learn how to walk — and ultimately dance and run. She talks about her stint on Dancing With The Stars, the non-profit she started with her mother to help others get a second chance at life, and how she stayed optimistic even in her darkest days.

These days, Shawn Johnson East is prepping for baby no. 3 (!!). But in 2008, she was a 16-year-old chasing after big Olympic dreams. The 4-time medalist is on the show today reflecting on what it was like to find success at a young age, and shares what it was like for her to adjust after Beijing to "normal" life post-sport. We talk about her comeback, her thoughts on working with a therapist, and what it's been like to shift into a new chapter as a mother, wife, and speaker. Plus: How she's embraced her body after years of battling disordered eating, and what she's most excited for right now.
