Undaunted Voices of Turkey: Stories of Women Who Resist

There was a failed coup attempt in Turkey on July 15, 2016. In the aftermath, the Turkish authorities sacked or suspended tens of thousands of public employees, and persecuted thousands of civilians as reported in international media. Some were imprisoned without any formal charges or were tortured in jails. News media have reported on the political aspects of Turkey’s coup, but few have documented the true impact of the turmoil on people, mainly women, and children. As an independent group of women, we have volunteered to share the stories of women who have deeply suffered from the purges but insisted on resisting the oppression. In these stories, you will listen to the women who fight and resist oppression in various ways: women finding creative ways to financially support their family as the only breadwinner; families who had to flee the country due to fear for their lives; mothers of babies who learned to crawl and had their first steps in jail; and many more. What you will also find is the love and courage that gave them resilience to fight hardship, and the continuous hope that kept them from giving up. Today is July 15, 2019. Three years ago, at this night, a coup attempt happened in Turkey. The attempt failed, but thousands of lives were altered forever. This special episode is about four women’s memory of that night. For safety concerns, all of the names in this episode are alias. Some of the voiceovers you will hear also have similar experiences and are the survivors of that night.

This special episode is about absence of fathers and children healing from it and finding ways to remember them.

The story of a woman who was imprisoned without due process under inhumane conditions for 10 months: a mother who had to hide her imprisonment to protect her children and pretended to be working abroad: a wife who felt her husband's love over the tags of her clothes and tears that were shared with an unexpected company, a Greek border patrol officer.

The story of a preschool teacher who was once acknowledged with many awards but labeled a terrorist later: a mother who had to give birth all alone, a wife who had to afford her family’s life by painting stones, surely a warrior who had to leave everything she built behind.
