The Flying Fijians will be keen to build on their win at Apia Park last year, when they clash in Suva tomorrow night. Josh Lord and Harry Plummer will remain in the All Blacks squad for their Rugby Championship tour of South Africa as the injury struggles continue for Blues pair Patrick Tuipulotu and Stephen Perofeta. All Blacks medical staff also cleared loose forward Luke Jacobson and prop Ethan de Groot for the tour.  And in Rugby League: The 14th rugby league Immortal is legendary Rabbitohs and Roosters forward Ron Coote. Coote won six premierships across the 1960s and 70s, played 148 NSWRFL games for South Sydney and 109 games for Eastern Suburbs. He also played 23 times for Australia, was the recipient of the 1971 Clive Churchill Medal and won three World Cups in 1968, 1970 and 1975. Coote was the NSWRL Player of the Year in 1969, 1970, 1975 and 1977. He also won the 1970 and 1974 Harry Sunderland Medals for the best player of the Ashes series against England. In SportsBiz: A wild and chaotic PGA Championship on and off the course, ended with a dramatic finish Sunday evening as American standout and PGA Tour loyalist Xander Schauffele birdied the final hole to beat LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke.   Schauffele takes home US$3.3Million for his first major championship title at Valhalla Golf Club, bringing his total earnings so far in 2024 to just under US$11M. In combat sports: Oleksandr Usyk will only be able to call himself undisputed World Heavyweight Boxing Champion for a couple more weeks.
 
Despite winning “the fight of the century” against Tyson Fury via split decision in Saudi Arabia yesterday, and claiming the Gypsy King’s WBC title, which the Ukranian Warrior added to his WBA, IBF and WBO belts – the first time one man has done so in over 25 years, his status will only last a matter of two weeks.
Boxing journalist Dan Rafael has reported that both Fury and Usyk’s contracts recognised that they must vacate the IBF title ahead of overdue mandatory challenger Filip Hrgovic’s bout with Daniel Dubois on 01 June.
In Rugby: While the Top 4 – Blues, Hurricanes, Brumbies and Chiefs are locked in for the Super Rugby Pacific play-off finals, there is still some wiggle room in the make-up of positions 5 – 8 where the Reds, Highlanders, Force, Drua and Rebels are all in the running.
Our world famous tips for the last two rounds of Super Rugby Pacific 2024:
·       The Reds should beat the Force and the Tahs in their remaining two games for fifth
·       The Rebels will find it very tough against the Brumbies and the Drua to hang on to sixth
·       The Highlanders should be good enough to stay in the Top 8 with games against the Drua at home and the Hurricanes away
·       The Force are on a roll, but have two tough games in the Reds away and the Brumbies in Perth
·       The Fijian Drua will be lucky to beat the Highlanders in Dunedin, but are good enough to smash the Rebels in Lautoka
 
So our tip for 5th are the Reds, 6th Highlanders, the Fijian Drua in 7th and the Rebels to finish 8th.
 
In rugby league: Results from the last day of NRL Magic Round at Suncorp yesterday: The New Zealand Warriors 22-20 Penrith Panthers, the Melbourne Storm 48-16 Parramatta Eels and in the last game of magic round - Wests Tigers fell to the Dolphins 24-12.
 
In Super Netball: Giants star Jamie-Lee Price has become the first player sent-off under Super Netball’s new no-warning suspension rules in her side’s 76-52 loss to the NSW Swifts yesterday.
 
The Giants co-captain lasted just eight minutes before being sent from the court for dangerous play, leaving her team a woman down for two minutes.
Super Netball’s newest team, the Melbourne Mavericks nabbed their second win of the season - sinking the Queensland Firebirds 62-69.
The star of the show and match MVP was experienced Jamaican, Shimona Jok who finished with 52 goals from 57 shots. 
And finally, Liz Watson led her new team, Sunshine Coast Lightning, to a bittersweet 64-57 win over her former side, the Melbourne Vixens.

At the FIFA World Cup: French President Emmanuel Macron has joined millions of Australians in jumping aboard the Matildas bandwagon after Australia’s penalty shootout victory over France in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday night.

Macron proved he is indeed a man of his word by publicly declaring his support of the Matildas in their upcoming semi-final match against England on social media.

“Nothing personal against our English friends, but a bet is a bet,” Macron wrote on X (formerly Twitter) - “Good luck Australia for the semi-finals!”

In Rugby World Cup 2023 warm up Tests yesterday England 19-17 Wales and Scotland 27-30 France. Tonga plays Canada in Nukualofa at 1pm local time tomorrow and Fiji plays France in Nantes at 7:05pm local time this Saturday, while Manu Samoa is on holiday soaking up the sun somewhere in Europe.


 


In rugby league: Two big scores in the NRL games yesterday: Melbourne Storm 48-2 Canberra Raiders at AAMI Park and the Newcastle Knights 42-6 Canterbury Bulldogs at McDonald Jones Stadium.


 


In SportsBiz: Millions of Australians turned on their TVs to watch the Matildas defeat France in Saturday's FIFA World Cup quarterfinal.


 


Seven West Media has reported an estimated average audience of 4.17 million people — making it the number one television event of 2023 so far.


 


Of this number, 472,000 viewers watched the game on Seven's streaming platform 7plus — making it the biggest streaming event ever seen in Australia.


 


These figures do not capture out-of-home viewers at clubs, pubs, sporting venues and multiple live site broadcasts.

·  No matter what the sport, wily old coaches always say that great D wins games, and so it proved last night with the Crusaders putting in a BIG day at the office, clocking up a new Super Rugby record of 250 tackles to hold out the hard-charging Chiefs 20-6 in freezing, wet conditions in Christchurch.

And so today up in sunny Auckland at a predicted 14 degrees Celsius, we tip the Blues to dismantle the Brumbies to advance to the Super Rugby Pacific final next week.

·  With 19 All Blacks playing in Christchurch last night and more today, the Super Rugby Pacific semi-finals are great trials for the first All Blacks squad to be named on Monday. The Crusaders could provide the bulk of the All Blacks, but the challenge for Head Coach Ian Foster and his selectors is whether to select a champion team, or a team of stars.

·  In the NRL, Already without ORIGIN forwards Jeremiah Nanai and Reuben Cotter, the Cowboys lost star forward, Heilum Luki early in the first half, but they barely missed a beat, with superstar Jason Taumalolo and Hooker Reece Robson leading the way to a 31-12 win against St George Dragons in Townsville last night.

·  In football, England plays Italy in the Nations League with only 3,000 fans allowed to watch; punishment for all the crowd trouble before the Euro 2020 final when fans without tickets forced their way through security gates into Wembley stadium.

England Manager Gareth Southgate says the punishment is embarrassing for the country.

·  In boxing, Three-weight world champion, Naoya Inoue is the first Japanese boxer to be crowned “World Pound-for-Pound King”. Unbeaten at 23-0, with 20 wins by Knockout. Inoue is the reigning undisputed WBC, WBA, IBF and Ring Bantamweight World Champion.

·  Finally in money matters, Forbes estimates that the 46-year-old Tiger Woods has now joined LeBron James and Michael Jordan as the third athlete in history to reach billionaire status based on his golf winnings, endorsements and other business ventures over the years.

Nowadays less than 10% of Tiger’s net worth and career earnings originate from the golf course. The vast majority of his wealth is generated from lucrative endorsement deals with various brands including Nike, Gatorade, Rolex and TaylorMade.

Every State of Origin player in ORIGIN I on Wednesday made A$30,000 match allowance just for making the game-day 17.

And  for all the players NOT in the State of Origin series, the NRL  announced a boost in their Club’s salary cap from the current  A$10Million ceiling to $10.5M next season, with an annual increase of A$100,000 each subsequent year during the next broadcast cycle.

Sad  news in boxing, the South African boxer who became disoriented during a  fight and threw punches in the direction of an empty corner has died.

You  may have seen the video of Simiso Buthelezi on Youtube, well he passed  away yesterday after being induced into a coma following the fight on 5  June in Durban. He was 24 years old. RIP bro.

Finally today, Tiger Woods turned down nearly US$1Billion to join the Saudi-backed LIV Tour, CEO Greg Norman told The Washington Post.

The  first LIV Invitational tournament teed off in London yesterday with  US$25Million in prize money of which US$4M goes to the winner.

For  their troubles, all 17 PGA-ranked players who entered this tournament –  including Phil Mickleson and Sergio Garcia, have been suspended by the  US PGA, who see the Saudi-backed tour as a big threat.

In boxing, World Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury bought two brand new Rolls-Royce cars yesterday at a bargain F$1.2Million each. The Gypsy King owns two other Rolls - so four in total now, a classic Mini Cooper, a Range Rover, a couple of Ferrari’s and a Volkswagen.

Wayne Gretzky won the 1988 Stanley Cup – er that’s in ice hockey, in his final game for the Edmonton Oilers.

So last weekend, his jersey from that final sold for US$1.5Million at auction, becoming the most expensive hockey jersey of all time.

Harry Kane's goal against Germany on Tuesday night was his 50th goal for England, now just three behind Wayne Rooney's record. It took Cristiano Ronaldo 114 games to score 50 goals for Portugal and Lionel Messi scored 50 in 107 games for Argentina. Kane has got his in just 71 games.

Sepp Blatter – remember him? The fraud trial of the former-FIFA President was held up again after the 86 year old Blatter complained of chest pains and breathing difficulties.

Swiss prosecutors allege a 2011 FIFA payment of US$2.2Million authorised by Blatter to Michel Platini, ex-UEFA President was unlawful.

Get this, Blatter and Platini say it was a late payment for advisory work by Platini for the then FIFA President, done 13 years earlier in 1998. Sorry, but these two are crooks!
